Travel information TSA Secure Flight Program

Within the framework of the Secure Flight Program, US authorities demand additional personal data of travellers when these book their flights to the US. This regulation applies to flights from the/to the/ within the US and US territories and to airlines registered in the US (regardless of the flights’ destination). This regulation is effective as of November 01, 2010, regardless of when the reservation was made.

According to the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), this is to increase the security on international and domestic flights. In future, there will be an early comparison of the passenger data with the so-called “No fly“ lists of the US security agencies. This is to prevent suspicious people from getting on board.

In order to comply with the US regulations and not to inconvenience passengers, Brandl Transport GmbH through its travel agent BCD Travel prepares processes for the capture of the passenger data required. Please find here the most important pieces of information at a glance.

What is the Secure Flight Program?

The Secure Flight Program allows the US anti-terror agencies to compare the passenger data with lists of known or suspected terrorists. This is to increase the security on international and domestic flights. The Secure Flight regulations require passengers to make available the following Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD):

• Full name (as given in the official passport)

• Date of birth

• Sex

• Redress no. (if applicable)1

What consequences could non-compliance with the Secure Flight regulations have?

Flight reservations without SFPD will be rejected by the Secure Flight Program. This can have the following consequences:

• the airlines levy penalties

• cancellation of the reservation (even after the ticket has been issued)

• boarding passes cannot be printed (both inline and at the check-in)

• more security checks at the airport

• the passenger is not allowed to board the plane

What deadlines and dates are there?

The TSA will fine airlines that do not comply with the Secure Flight regulations from November 01, 2010. Airlines have to make available their passengers’ SFPD to the TSA no later than 72 hours prior

to departure. Please note that airlines may have their individual Secure Flight regulations implementation dates, which might have an influence on the time the data are entered for the flight reservation. If the time span between the reservation and departure is less than 72 hours, this does not automatically have negative consequences for the travellers. The Secure Flight System is able to make a rapid data/no-fly-lists comparison.
