clima case

clima cases are state-of-the-art packacking containers for the safe move of artworks. whilst the name "clima cases" is a german "invention", most  anglo-american customers will name such  products  "museum quality insulated case".

In fact "clima cases" (like all cases) are not clima cases. A defined clima (and a requested level of r.h.) cannot be generated actively. That is why this cases are so-called "passive climatized cases".

Their interior composition of materials is produced by layers of insulating and hygroscopic materials. By delivering the case a minimum of 24 hours prior to packing to the lending museum, the interior of the case will be preconditioned to the temperature and relative humidity of the museum environment.

Depending of the quality of the case and its components PLUS the logistics AND technical matters supplied a preconditioned clima can be maintained for many hours, even days.

temperature halftime

"temperature halftime" is one of the ominous secrets of the clima case chapter.

at least in Europe we encounter every day a situation, that in the frame of public tenders ( national or europeanwide) a temperature halftime of 3, 6, 9 or 12 hours is requested as imperative.

given  that all vendors do their own testing or at least provide test spec's to the testing institute, you will find that not one test result can be compared to another.

so did we, specified what we consider the worst case scenario and had - not surprisingly to us - results at the upper end of the scale.

clima case testing

The test result : this clima case - under the condition of this test & test environment - has a temperature halftime of 12 hours.

We identified SLG as the best test institute. SKG is registered with a national and european certification.

two test candidates

we did not test one, but two cases. we thought to have a brilliant idea, and tested our new design (model B ) versus the clima case standard ( model A ).  Despite all expectation we had towards a new sandwhich-composite-material - we continue producing model A. ..

cold times - temperature drop by 20 degrees Celsius

conditioning time : 24 hrs

test start conditions: 19,4 degress Celsius  & 55,5 % r.H.

activity 1: reduce test chamber temp from  + 20 to + 3 degrees in 1 h.

activity 2: hold at + 3 for 12 hours

activity 3: find results

result: after 12:16 hrs. temperature halftime has been reached at + 10 Celsius , and with a r.H. of 40 %
